My guess, is by killing her, their is bond of death. It isn't love because Nicole can't see her and their bond was close. Every suspect is someone Maddie choose to trust instead of him and he is showing her their bad side and how they weren't good enough. The whole theme of the show is that you don't see who people truly are.
